15 Indian breakfast recipes for weight loss that keep you full till lunch
By Shwetang Chikankar · 21 October 2026 · 7 min read
Look up Indian breakfast recipes for weight loss and you usually get one of two things: salads nobody wants at 8 am, or the same poha and upma you already eat. Neither helps much. A good weight loss breakfast is simply one that keeps you full until lunch, so the 11 am biscuits and the 4 pm samosa never happen.
Below are 15 breakfasts I use with clients, each linked to a full recipe, plus simple fixes for the breakfast you already eat. For why morning protein matters so much, read high-protein Indian breakfast ideas. This post is the practical recipe list.
What makes a breakfast good for weight loss
- •Protein, about 15 to 30 g. This is what keeps you full. Most standard breakfasts like poha, upma, toast or plain idli land well under 10 g.
- •Some fibre. Vegetables, sprouts, oats, millets or a dal batter. Fibre adds volume and slows digestion.
- •A sensible carb portion. You do not need to give up roti, rice or poha. Make them the side, not the whole plate.
- •Measured oil. One or two teaspoons in the pan, not a spoon of ghee poured on top.
- •It fits your real morning. A good breakfast you can make in five minutes beats a perfect one you never have time for.
One simple rule: every breakfast gets one protein anchor. Paneer, curd, dal batter, besan or sattu, tofu, soya, eggs, milk or a scoop of whey. The carbs can stay. They just should not travel alone.
15 Indian breakfast recipes for weight loss, with protein per serving
Protein figures are per serving, from the recipe pages. Treat them as a guide. They change with your portion size and the brand of paneer or curd you use.
- •Paneer-stuffed moong dal cheela: about 32 g protein. Soaked moong batter with a paneer filling. The best all-rounder on this list.
- •Besan chilla with hung curd: about 29 g. The classic, made far more filling with thick curd on the side.
- •Tofu bhurji: about 35 g. Cooks just like anda bhurji. Works for vegans and anyone who avoids eggs.
- •Paneer bhurji wrap: about 28 g. Roll it in a roti and eat it on the way to work.
- •Moong dal idli: about 23 g a plate. Steamed, almost no oil, and a real protein idli.
- •Moong dal dosa (pesarattu): about 23 g. The Andhra green moong dosa; add a little crumbled paneer inside for more.
- •Moong dal uttapam: about 20 g. Thick, loaded with vegetables and very filling.
- •Overnight protein oats: about 39 g with a scoop of whey or plant protein. Made the night before, zero effort in the morning.
- •Masala oats with paneer: about 24 g. A savoury oats bowl for people who do not like sweet oats.
- •Ragi protein porridge: about 24 g. Warm and gentle, good for early mornings or after a night shift.
- •Light paneer paratha: about 22 g. Yes, paratha can fit. Low-fat paneer and one teaspoon of oil.
- •Methi thepla with hung curd: about 23 g. The travel and tiffin favourite, with curd doing the protein work.
- •Sattu cheela: about 17 g. Roasted chana flour, ready in 15 minutes, cheap and filling.
- •Paneer poha: about 16 g. Your normal poha with paneer and peas folded in at the end.
- •Egg bhurji with one roti: three eggs give roughly 18 g of protein. If you eat eggs, this is one of the cheapest and fastest options in India.
Most of these sit between about 300 and 550 kcal. If your daily target is on the lower side, choose the lighter ones or trim the carb part (one roti instead of two, a smaller portion of oats) and keep the protein part as it is. Short on time? The green protein smoothie takes five minutes, and a besan chilla is a good egg-free swap. There are more in the recipe library.
Fix the breakfast you already eat
You do not have to give up your family breakfast. Small changes go a long way:
- •Poha: halve the poha, add a handful of sprouts or crumbled paneer, and have a bowl of curd on the side.
- •Upma: more vegetables and less rava, or switch to quinoa vegetable upma or daliya upma, with curd or a glass of milk.
- •Idli or dosa: two or three, not five, with a thick dal sambar and a protein side. Or move to a moong dal batter.
- •Paratha: one stuffed with paneer, sattu or dal instead of two plain aloo parathas, cooked with a teaspoon of oil, curd on the side.
- •Bread with butter or jam: swap to tofu bhurji on toast or paneer besan toast.
- •Just chai and biscuits: this is the one I change first. Two biscuits with chai is a snack, not a breakfast. Add one of the five-minute options above.
A simple weekday breakfast rotation
You do not need 15 recipes in one week. Pick three or four you like and repeat them. Here is one easy pattern:
- •Monday and Thursday: moong dal cheela or besan chilla with curd.
- •Tuesday and Friday: overnight protein oats, made the night before.
- •Wednesday: paneer or tofu bhurji with one roti.
- •Saturday: moong dal idli or pesarattu with sambar.
- •Sunday: your usual family breakfast, poha, paratha or dosa, with a protein side added.
Do the prep on Sunday. Moong batter and boiled sprouts keep for two to three days in the fridge, so weekday mornings take ten minutes. More ideas in vegetarian meal prep for a busy week.
Breakfast tips for your situation
- •Not hungry in the morning? Do not force it. Make your first meal, whenever it is, protein-first.
- •Night shift? Your breakfast may be at 7 pm or at 8 am after you get home. Same rules. Before sleep, keep it light and protein-first. See night shift meal timing.
- •Diabetes or prediabetes? Carbs eaten with protein and fibre give a gentler sugar rise than a plain carb breakfast. Keep taking your medicines exactly as prescribed, and ask your doctor before changing meal times if you take insulin or tablets that can cause low sugar. More in the prediabetes diet guide.
- •PCOS or thyroid? A protein-first breakfast helps with hunger and energy. Take your thyroid tablet the way your doctor told you, which is often on an empty stomach before breakfast.
How much can breakfast alone change?
Honestly, breakfast is not magic. Fat loss still comes from your total intake over the day. What a good breakfast changes is everything after it: less mid-morning hunger, fewer unplanned snacks, and an easier time hitting your protein target. For how fast the scale should move once the day is in order, here is a realistic timeline in kilos and weeks.

Common questions
What is the best Indian breakfast for weight loss?
One with a clear protein anchor and some fibre, such as moong dal cheela, besan chilla with curd, paneer or tofu bhurji, or moong dal idli. The best one for you is the one you will actually make on a busy weekday.
How many calories should breakfast be for weight loss?
For most people, roughly a quarter of the day, which usually works out to about 300 to 500 kcal. What matters more is that it carries 15 to 30 g of protein so you stay full until lunch.
Is paratha okay for weight loss?
Yes, if you change how you make it. One paratha stuffed with paneer, sattu or dal, cooked with a teaspoon of oil and eaten with curd, fits a weight loss plan. Two plain aloo parathas with butter usually do not.
Can I skip breakfast to lose weight?
You can. Total intake over the day matters more than meal timing. But if skipping breakfast makes you overeat in the evening, eat it. If you take diabetes medicines, talk to your doctor before skipping meals.
What is a good Indian breakfast for weight loss without eggs?
Moong dal cheela, besan chilla with curd, tofu bhurji, paneer bhurji, sattu cheela, moong dal idli and overnight protein oats are all egg-free and give roughly 17 to 39 g of protein per serving.
