The old-school Indian energy drink: roasted gram flour whisked into cold water with lemon and spices. Cheap, no-cook, refreshing, and a genuine plant-protein hit in two minutes.

Ingredients

  • •3 heaped tbsp (about 45 g) sattu, roasted gram flour
  • •One and a half cups (300 ml) cold water
  • •Juice of half a lemon
  • •Half tsp roasted cumin powder
  • •Black salt and regular salt to taste
  • •A green chilli, finely chopped (optional)
  • •A few coriander leaves, chopped

Method

  1. 1.Put the sattu in a large glass and add a little water first, whisking into a smooth paste so it does not go lumpy.
  2. 2.Add the rest of the cold water and stir well.
  3. 3.Mix in the lemon juice, roasted cumin, both salts, chilli and coriander.
  4. 4.Stir and drink straight away, over ice if it is hot out.

Coach’s note

Prefer it sweet? Skip the salt, cumin and chilli, and stir in a little jaggery or a chopped date instead. Same cheap protein, different mood.
