Fat Loss
Enjoy Diwali fully, and still keep your progress

Diwali is not one meal. It is five days of faral in the morning, sweet boxes arriving every evening, visits to relatives, card parties and late dinners. Most people go in with one of two plans: be very strict and miss the fun, or give up on day one and restart in December. Neither works well.
The goal for Diwali week is not to lose weight. It is to enjoy the festival and come out the other side close to where you started, with your routine still standing. That is a good result. For the wider festive season, read how to get through festival season.
Four rules for the whole week
- •One normal meal a day. Whatever else happens, one meal stays your usual: dal, paneer, curd, eggs or chicken, a sabzi, and your normal roti or rice. This one meal keeps the day from drifting.
- •Protein-first breakfast. Before the faral plate comes out, eat something with real protein. A besan chilla with curd, a moong dal cheela, paneer bhurji or eggs. You will want far less faral after it.
- •Pick your favourites, skip the rest. Every house has eight kinds of sweets. You probably love two of them. Eat those, on a plate, sitting down, and enjoy them. Let the rest go.
- •Walk after the big meal. Ten to fifteen minutes after lunch or dinner. Walk to see the lights and rangoli, or to a neighbour. It is the easiest habit to keep on a festival day.
A simple day-by-day plan
- •Dhanteras: for most people this is still a work day. Eat normally. Do not start "Diwali mode" early. All that shopping counts as steps.
- •Choti Diwali: in many homes this is the big faral morning. Have your protein breakfast first, then a small plate of faral with tea. Faral is a side, not the breakfast.
- •Lakshmi Puja: the main day. Keep breakfast and lunch light and normal, then enjoy the prasad and the evening meal fully. No guilt. A short family walk after dinner.
- •Padwa or Govardhan Puja: the visiting day. One sweet per house is plenty. "I just ate, I will take a small piece" is a polite answer everyone understands.
- •Bhai Dooj: one more family meal. Same rules. Take the sabzi, dal and salad first, then the fried items and sweets.
- •The day after: back to your usual meals. Not a fast, not a detox, not two hours of cardio. Just normal.
Handling sweet boxes, visits and parties
- •Move the boxes out of sight. Put them in a cupboard, share them with neighbours, or take some to the office. Sweets on the counter get eaten without anyone deciding to.
- •When you visit relatives, accept the plate, eat one piece slowly, and leave the rest. Nobody is counting.
- •Before a card party or office Diwali party, eat a proper meal. Arriving hungry is how one handful of namkeen becomes five. If you drink, read alcohol and fat loss first.
- •Drink water, not cold drinks. Sweet drinks are the easiest calories to skip, because you will not miss them.
- •Living abroad? The office potluck and the weekend community event are your Diwali. Same rules apply.
Why the scale jumps the morning after
Most people see the scale go up by one or two kilos after the main day. That is not fat. To gain one kilo of fat you need to eat roughly 7,700 calories more than you burn, which is far more than a festive day usually adds. The jump is mostly:
- •Salt. Namkeen, chakli, chivda and restaurant-style gravies are salty, and your body holds on to extra water when you eat more salt.
- •Glycogen. Sweets and extra carbs refill the energy stores in your muscles and liver, and that stored energy holds water with it.
- •Food still in your gut. More food and a late dinner simply weigh something the next morning.
This usually settles within a few days of normal meals, water and walking. Look at your weekly average, not one morning. More on this in why your weight jumps overnight.
What not to do
- •Do not skip meals to "save calories" for the feast. You will arrive starving and eat more.
- •Do not punish yourself with a fast or a very long workout the next day. It sets up the next binge.
- •Do not weigh yourself every morning of Diwali week and panic. Weigh in after the week is over.
- •Do not decide the week is ruined after one heavy meal. One meal does not decide anything.
If you have a health condition
If you have diabetes or prediabetes, PCOS or thyroid, these same rules help, and you should keep taking your medicines exactly as your doctor prescribed. For blood sugar in particular, read Diwali with diabetes. For lighter snacks to keep at home, see healthier Diwali faral.
Diwali is about family, lights and food you have waited all year for. Enjoy it. Then make the next meal normal and carry on. If the week does get away from you, getting back on track is simpler than you think.
Common questions
Can I eat sweets during Diwali and not gain weight?
Yes. Pick the one or two sweets you love most, eat them on a plate after a meal, and skip the ones you only eat because they are there. Keep one normal meal a day, a protein breakfast and a walk after the big meal, and most people finish the week close to where they started.
Why am I 2 kg heavier the day after Diwali?
Mostly water. Extra salt from namkeen and extra carbs from sweets make your body hold more water, and there is more food in your gut. Gaining a kilo of fat takes roughly 7,700 extra calories, so one day cannot do it. Eat normally for a few days and the number usually comes back down.
Should I fast after Diwali to balance it out?
No. Punishment fasts usually lead to more overeating later. Go straight back to your normal meals, drink water, keep walking, and judge your weight on a weekly average. If you have diabetes or take regular medicines, talk to your doctor before any fast.
How do I say no to sweets when visiting relatives?
You do not need to say no. Accept the plate, eat one small piece slowly and leave the rest. Saying "I just ate, I will take a small piece" is polite and works almost everywhere.
